Evolution of an Andean margin: a tectonic and magmatic view from the Andes to the Neuquén Basin (35 degrees-39 degrees S lat)
Suzanne Mahlburg Kay, Víctor A. Ramos
This work presents new data and ideas on the post-Mesozoic evolution of the Neuquén Basin. These studies have led to major steps in understanding the arc and retroarc evolution of this distinctive segment of the Andes, and are collected here as a complement to the literature on the young volcanic centers of the Southern Volcanic Zone arc, and to a book titled The Neuquén Basin: A case study in sequence stratigraphy and basin dynamics (published by the Geological Society of London). Topics explored include major revisions in the timing of Mesozoic and Cenozoic magmatic and deformational events in the arc and retroarc, the importance of pre-Tertiary structures in controlling younger deformational styles, and transient Miocene shallowing of the Andean subduction zone in association with development of Laramide-style magmatism. Numerous b&w and color maps and photos are included. Kay is affiliated with Cornell University. Ramos is affiliated with the University of Buenos Aires.
